ABOUT GREEN THUMB THEATRE:

Green Thumb's offices are located on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of thexʷməθkʷəy̓əm(Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səl̓ílwətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. As a touring company, Green Thumb Theatre’s work often takes place throughout the traditional homelands of most of the Indigenous Nations and cultures across British Columbia and beyond.

Green Thumb Theatre is a force within the field of theatre for young audiences, not only in British Columbia, but across the country and throughout the world. Green Thumb Theatre creates, produces, and tours plays that explore social issues relevant to the lives of children, youth, and young adults. We provide theatre that celebrates the language and stories of today’s generation and culture to stimulate empathy, debate, and critical thinking.

DESCRIPTION OF CONTRACT:

Green Thumb Theatre (the “Theatre”) is seeking an experienced artist or educator (the “Author”) to create a study and resource guide to accompany our new production, CAGED by Rachel Aberle. This show is for high school-aged audiences, grades 8 and up.

Applicants from outside of the Lower Mainland are welcome to apply, as this work can be completed remotely. Applicants must be based in Canada.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE AUTHOR:

-         Read CAGED by Rachel Aberle

-         Liaise with Green Thumb Theatre’s Artistic Director and General Manager about the content of the study guide

-         Align the content of the study guide with relevant BC Ministry of Education curriculum guidelines

-         Create a study guide for CAGED that includes:

·        3to 4 relevant and age-appropriate pre-show classroom discussion questions

·        3to 4 relevant and age-appropriate post-show classroom discussion questions

·        2to 3 relevant and age-appropriate classroom group, art, or writing activities suitable for pre- and post-show reflections/explorations

·        A list of relevant and age-appropriate resources for:

o  students and educators (primarily), and

o  student's guardians (secondary) – optional, but preferred

·        A list of definitions or other sections as deemed necessary by the Author and Artistic Director

 

PROJECT TIMELINE (subject to change):

-         July 1, 2025 – RFP Submission Deadline

-         Late July 2025 – Interviews to take place via Zoom

-         August 1, 2025 – Contract offer made

-         August 22, 2025 – First draft of the Study Guide submitted to the Theatre

-         August 29, 2025 – Final draft of the Study Guide submitted to the Theatre

-         September 12, 2025 - The Theatre to have the final designed version of the study guide ready for review by both parties

-         September 16, 2025 – Deadline for corrections to be sent to the Theatre by the Author

 

SYNOPSIS FOR CAGED BY RACHEL ABERLE:

How can you navigate a relationship when you don’t even know what a healthy one looks like? Can a friendship survive the tension between love and control? After a summer apart, two teenage friends reunite in their secret park spot, where their friendship and shared memories have always been a safe refuge. But everything shifts when Ronnie brings along her new boyfriend, Trev, a charming yet increasingly controlling presence. Trev’s influence quickly begins to seep into every corner of Ronnie’s life, from her dance practice to her friendship with her best friend, Jas. Subtle red flags start to emerge. Ronnie is torn between the demands of her new relationship and her deep connection to her friend.

REQUIREMENTS:

-          Knowledge of the BC Ministry of Education curriculum guidelines for Secondary students, including Indigenous Education, Arts Education, English Language Arts Education, Social Studies, and Physical and Health Education.

-         Experience creating lesson plans for high school-aged youth

-         A familiarity with theatre for young audiences is an asset
