We're celebrating!
2010/11 is our 35th Season of producing and touring professional theatre for people of all ages. From our elementary school tours to our performances in New York and Sydney, Green Thumb continues to make theatre that is relevant, engaging and entertaining.

500 WORDS by Jamie Norris
This brand new elementary school show by one of our favorite playwrights' follows two unlikely heroes who come together to create a magical story that neither could have imagined on their own. Full of knights-in-shining-armor and faraway places, 500 Words explores fundamental curriculum themes of literacy and cooperation. Suitable for all grades.
Synopsis: Lance is the smartest kid in grade six who never misses an opportunity to show off his vocabulary. His teacher assigns him a reading buddy, Sylvia, who is a daydreamer but now that she's in grade three is finding it harder to hide that she never really learned how to read. All Lance wants to do when they are together is write for the story contest, not help Sylvia. But Lance can't think of a story until Sylvia imagines a whole world for him of magic, heroes and adventure. Learning together the unlikely pair create a magical story neither could have on their own. In the end, Sylvia loses her fear of reading and Lance learns that the biggest word is not always the smartest word and that you really can't judge a person without knowing them.
The Shape of a Girl by Joan MacLeod
Green Thumb Theatre is pleased to announce the return of our award winning and internationally acclaimed commission by Joan MacLeod. The Shape of a Girl is a dynamic one-woman show that looks at the realities of teenage relationships, aggression and codes of behaviour. Suitable for ages 13 to adult.
Synopsis: Braidie is fascinated by a TV news story about a girl accused of a shocking act of violence, "a monster in the shape of a girl". A different kind of girl from her and her friends...or is she? Propelled by memories she can't forget and scenes from her past she can no longer ignore, Braidie must confront the truth of her giddy, terrifying teenage world. Can she find the courage to break her friends' conspiracy of silence when their bullying of a classmate goes too far?
Drifting by Chris Gatchalian
A light and compassionate look at a serious subject, Drifting is the working title of a new play about mental illness and the impact it has on all of us. Suitable for grades 4 and up.
Synopsis: Twelve year old Myrtle regards her relationship with her uncle to be the closest and warmest one in her life. He is the only person she feels truly accepts her and her quirks. He encouraged her in everything and he taught her to fish. On every level they are kindred spirits. When he suddenly stops coming to see her, she learns to deal with and accept the reality of his lifelong struggle with mental illness.
The Edge Project will return for its second year in 2010. A collective creation produced and mentored by Green Thumb Theatre, The Edge project brings together students from secondary schools across the lower mainland to create and perform a play about their lives.
