2019/20 Season Announcement

The 2019/20 season will see five plays for young people which will tour across North America.

The season will open with THE CODE, Rachel Aberle's award-winning play for teens (Outstanding Production, Significant Artistic Achievement – Jessie Richardson Theatre Awards, Sydney Risk Prize for Outstanding Script by an Emerging Playwright) which will tour across Canada and the United States. THE CODE explores healthy teen relationships, online citizenship and gender discrimination in the post #MeToo era. Over the course of its 10-week tour, the show will have runs at Persephone Theatre (Saskatoon), The Great Canadian Theatre Company (Ottawa), Tennessee Performing Arts Center (Nashville) as well as a 10+ venue tour throughout Ontario (including 4 shows in remote Northern communities) and an outreach workshop at Flushing Town Hall (Queens, NY) at Flushing International High school.

We are thrilled to announce we’re bringing back a Green Thumb classic. NEW CANADIAN KID, written by founding Artistic Director Dennis Foon, based on a concept by Jane Howard Baker, premiered at Green Thumb in 1981 and since then has gone on to win multiple awards across the world. This critically acclaimed piece explores the challenges faced by young people in the midst of making Canada their new home. NEW CANADIAN KID will tour throughout British Columbia the Fall of 2019.

Green Thumb is excited to be partnering with Carousel Players (St. Catherine’s) to present a tour of Michael P. Northey’s award-winning one-man hip-hop show, CRANKED(Outstanding Design, Outstanding Original Script -Jessie Richardson Awards) CRANKED follows an up-and-coming emcee’s journey through his addiction, and the rough road to recovery. The show will tour throughout the Niagara region, an area that has seen a significant increase in overdose deaths due to the fentanyl crisis in the past two years. This is a unique and exciting partnership for both companies, giving us the opportunity to explore new regions within Ontario.

WHAT IF, by Katey Hoffman is back for a second season after a 100-show tour throughout British Columbia last season. Our heartfelt comedy for elementary school audiences about making friends and overcoming social anxiety will be touring throughout British Columbia and Alberta in the spring of 2020. Don’t miss the show that even the toughest critics (students K-7) are saying was their ‘favourite show ever ever’.

Lastly, coming off the road and onto the stage, Green Thumb’s award-winning and internationally acclaimed play STILL/FALLING by Rachel Aberle, will be presented as part of Carousel Theatre’s (Vancouver)2019/20 season at the Waterfront Theatre on Granville Island. On tour since 2015, STILL/FALLING has opened up important conversations about mental health for over 100,000 teens, educators and parents across North America, and we are so excited to bring this timely piece to students and families in Metro Vancouver in the spring of 2020.
