CALL FOR EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST | Designers for the 2023-24 Season

Contract Position | Application Deadline February 23rd, 2023
Posted: February 7th, 2023

Green Thumb Theatre is inviting expressions of interest from lower mainland-based designers to work with us during our upcoming 2023-24 season. As the season is still being confirmed, we are unable to share specific show details. At this time, we expect the season to consist of a total of 4 touring shows, some of which will be remounts. The successful respondents will be contracted to a specific show.

Possible design opportunities include Set & Props, Costumes, Video/Projections, and Sound. We are particularly interested in hearing from set designers with school touring experience, projection designers, costume designers, and anyone with experience designing and/or building puppets. Compensation will vary between $1,000 and $5,000,depending on the needs of the position and the experience of the candidate.

About the positions:

Set and Props Designer

Touring into schools and typically performing in gyms, all Green Thumb touring sets must be able to be set up and struck two times a day, within 30 minutes. Sets must also break down to fit in a sprinter van. Previous touring set design experience would be an asset.

Costume Designer

Touring directly into schools, costumes must be durable, be able to go through 2-3shows per day, be stored in duffle bags or something similar, non-dry clean, and easily machine washable. Budgets must include doubles for all base costumes and any long wear costumes that touch skin. All alterations and building must be included in this budget. Due to the nature of touring, rentals are not possible.

Sound Designer

The Stage Manager will run sound cues from QLab through two left/right speakers on the gym floor. Please note that the show should also be able to function without the L/R capability if the sound system is reduced during set up. The Designer should be aware that the typical venue will be a large gymnasium. In addition to possible sound effects, the Designer may be required to compile pre-show music, intro, transition and ending music. It’s preferred that the Designer be familiar with QLab in order to make timing adjustments as needed. A QLab license and computer can be made available to the Designer for the duration of the contract if needed in order to build the layered and complex cues.

Video/Projections Designer

The Stage Manager will run projection cues from QLab through a projector set up on the gym floor, which will project onto the set. The Designer should be aware that the typical venue will be a large gymnasium, and control of lighting levels may not always be possible. It’s preferred that the Designer be familiar with QLab in order to make adjustments as needed. A QLab license and computer can be made available to the Designer for the duration of the contract if needed.
