GREEN THUMB THEATRE CALENDAR | Seeking expressions of interest from Black and Indigenous illustrators based in BC

Calendar Page Illustration Commission

Seeking expressions of interest from  Black and Indigenous illustrators based in BC to design a calendar page for upcoming project.

Contract Position

Deadline to apply: March 29, 2021
Posted: March 4, 2021

Largely drawing from the wealth of talent that emerged through our search for an illustrator for a colouring book adaptation of Green Thumb Theatre’s CELESTIAL BEING by Dave Deveau, Green Thumb Theatre is developing a calendar celebrating our past productions and the original work of BC-based visual artists. Each month of the calendar will feature an illustration inspired by a previous Green Thumb production for elementary school aged students. This calendar will be provided free of charge to elementary school teachers in the lower mainland of BC, while supplies last.

In order to ensure the calendar represents the rich diversity present in the province currently referred to as British Columbia, we have reserved spaces in this project to feature work by Black and Indigenous artists. While the colouring book submissions provided a broadly diverse representation of many other communities of colour, we took note that Black and Indigenous artists appeared to be underrepresented. As such, this call for expressions of interest is limited specifically to Black and Indigenous illustrators based in BC.

Green Thumb recognizes that artists and contractors are informed by all facets of their identities. We welcome applicants to inform us of their pronouns if they wish, and to include details about how their identity informs their practice and needs as they see fit.

If you are Black or/and Indigenous and previously submitted materials for the colouring book project but did not self-identify, and you are interested in the calendar project, please send us an email at submissions@greenthumb.bc.ca.

The Project:

- The Artist will confer with Green Thumb Theatre’s Artistic Director, Rachel Aberle, to design and deliver 1 full colour illustration inspired by a play from our history.

- A short bio of the artist will be featured alongside the image in the printed calendar

- Illustrators will receive a synopsis from which to develop an illustration

- Illustration will be formatted to a max size of 10.5"x8", in a landscape orientation. These measurements are accounting for page bleed, actual page size is 11”x8.5”.

- Illustration will be delivered to the company as PDF, JPEG or PNG files

Remuneration:

$300 commission fee for one illustration
